Chabad centers and shuls around the world will be hosting special readings of the Ten Commandments on the holiday of Shavuos, celebrating the date that G‑d gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai more than 3,300 years ago.
The Rebbe has campaigned for every man, woman and child to hear the Aseres Hadibros on Shavuos, falling this year on Sunday, May 20, 2018, and reaffirm the covenant with G‑d and His Torah.
While shuls will be hosting the reading as part of their services, Chabad centers will be holding special event throughout the day to accommodate those who can’t make it to the general service.
To clarify the laws of the special Torah readings, Dayan Levi Raskin of London, England, has compiled a helpful guide titled “Shavuos Torah Reading Laws.”
The following are highlights of the 4-page guide written in Hebrew:
The Rebbe encouraged bringing young children and babies on Shavuos to the reading of the Aseres Hadibros in Shul.
A full YomTov reading including maftir can be scheduled later in the day. This Minyan would include six men who didn’t hear Krias haTorah earlier.
A Mechitza separation is required at all Torah readings. If no minyan, one may read just the Aseres Hadibros, without the regular Brochos.
Educate the children to wait for Kiddush before the ice cream. Raffling prizes on a Shabbos is forbidden, and is questionable even on Yom Tov.
