The Jewish communities of Phoenix and Pittsburgh were united by a community Torah written in honor of the continued recovery of Chabad Shlucha Sashie Levertov.
After being diagnosed with leukemia in January 2012, friends from her hometown in Pennsylvania joined her community members in Arizona in launching a mitzva campaign in her merit.
Levertov, 28 and a mother of 4, directs Chabad’s Aleph Bet Preschool & Kindergarten in Phoenix and runs Bat Mitzvah and Beyond for teenage girls and Loaves of Love, a challah “bake and gift” program.
The final letters and completion ceremony was held this past Tuesday at Chabad of Phoenix, followed by a joyous hakafot procession and a buffet dinner attended by rabbis and community members.
Writing the Torah was the idea of Tzvia Haliliyan whose oldest daughter works at the Aleph Bet school. “Everybody cares about her, everybody wants to do something,” said Halilyan. “This [Torah scroll] is also something that everybody can participate in.”
Addressing the celebration and thanking Hashem for his miracles were Rabbi Zalman Levertov, Head Shliach of Arizona and Sashie’s father in law and Rabbi Yisroel Rosenfeld, Head Shliach of Pittsburgh, her father.
Sashie,
What a wonderful way to express your gratitude to Hashem for your improved health situation. May Hashem continue to give you strength to build your family and community with Yiras Hashem. Thank you for forwarding this joyful article and pics. A fellow Yinzer
