The Chabad of Golden Beach, FL community, led by dynamic Shliach Rabbi Chay Amar, initiated the writing of a new Sefer Torah on 19 Shevat – February 8.
The Torah is dedicated in memory of Mr. James Perez, beloved Chazan of the community, who taught the local children to read from the Torah for many years.
The children and their parents are sponsoring the Torah in his honor.
Chazan Perez was a gifted teacher, with the ability to teach a child who arrived not reading Hebrew to being able to read the Torah with cantorial notes in a short time.
His recent passing at a premature age was a shock to the community, and he is very much missed by all.
The writing of the first letters mixed feelings of happiness for the Mitzvah and heavy hearts, as his seat was empty near the holy Ark.
The Torah is being written by Rabbi David Cohen of Montreal, who flew in especially to write the first letter and serve as MC for the event.
There was electricity in the air as young and old participated in the Simcha.
