In today’s daily Chumash for Thursday, 14 Kislev (Dec. 4), we learn that after the episode with Dina and Shechem, G-d instructed Yaakov to travel with his family to Beis E-l. The Torah describes this journey with the words:
ויסעו, ויהי חתת אלקים על הערים –
They then journeyed; and the (chitas) fear of G-d was upon the cities
(Vayishlach 35:5)
While the word “חתת-chitas” in the Torah means fear, it immediately calls to mind חת”ת — Chitas, the daily study cycle of Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya. But the connection is far more than just a simple linguistic coincidence.
The Rebbe explained on numerous occasions (based on the Tzemach Tzedek), just as in the story of Yaakov, where chitas-fear brought protection for him and his family as they traveled, so too Chitas — the daily study cycle of Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya — brings its own form of chitas-fear: strength, protection, and clarity in our daily journeys. As we face life’s obstacles, Chitas brings blessing and clears the path forward. (See for example Toras Menachem, vol. 17, p. 70.)
In fact, in a communal letter (michtav klali) written shortly after the Yom Kippur War in 5734 (1973), the Rebbe encouraged the daily study of Chitas, citing the abovementioned posuk as a source for its power to instill chitas-fear in our enemies (To the Sons and Daughters of Israel, vol. 1, p. 411).
On one occasion, the Rebbe added an illuminating insight: The Hebrew word “ויסעו – they then journeyed” can be rearranged to read “וסיוע – and assistance.” Through the study of Chitas, a person receives Divine assistance and support in all of life’s journeys. (See Toras Menachem 5752, vol. 1, p. 177).
