In the beginning the Rebbe mocked it because it was an “avodah zarah” of sorts and it was not seen as a means of serving Hashem. The Rebbe’s criticism was not that people shouldn’t go but why does there have to be such a “koch” in it, such an irrational excitement and obsession with it.

What was the use of sharing the fact that the Rebbe “mocked” going to the country – and then “changed his approach?”. That just sounded weird – can someone clarify please?
