By an admirer and supporter
“Hello, Rabbi Lipskier?”
“Speaking.”
“Hi, I just stirred a milchig soup with a fleishig ladle…”
It’s another day at the office in Chabad of Sherman Oaks.
“Rabbi Lipskier? We recently closed on a property for our Chabad house in Florida, but it used to be owned by a church. We need halachic guidance going forward…”
“Hi Rabbi Lipskier, I’m vacationing in Hawaii with my husband, and we have a Mikvah issue…”
“Rabbi, Qué verduras debemos comprar esta semana para Kiddush? [=which vegetables do we need to buy for this week’s Kiddush?]
“Rabbi Lipskier, what’s the name of the Niggun that starts like this?…”
“Hey Mendel, a close friend of mine is going through a tough time with his teenage son. We need some wisdom…”
“Rabbi, we just moved to town and would love to meet the community. What time are Shabbat services?”
“Reb Mendel, I’m going to put up Mezuzos at a close balebos’ house. Can you be on call to answer shailos?”
As you read this and smile, the list of requests, favors and advice-seekers is getting longer in real time.
In fact, there’s a high chance that you or someone close to you has made one such phone call or sent one such text.
And here’s the thing:
No matter how long the lines get, no matter how much time it takes, Rabbi Mendel Lipskier is there for anyone and everyone who turns to him.
Today, Rabbi Lipskier and his wife Shternie will be the ones making the phone calls.
They’ll be turning to you.
“Hi Mr. Cohen? At Chabad of Sherman Oaks, we’re running our annual fundraising campaign today. For the next 36 hours, every dollar you give is doubled. Can you help?”
Can you?
Will you?
I know I did. Generously. It’s the least I could do.
As the Gemara says:
“Peace unto you Rabbi Yehuda, you live in Netzivin and your net is spread over Yerushalayim.”
We say:
“Peace unto you Rabbi Lipskier, you live in Sherman Oaks and your net is spread across the globe.”
