Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson passed away on the 22nd of Shevat, 1988. From that year on, each year the Rebbe would hold a Farbrengen on that date- the Rebbetzin’s Yarhzheit.
In 1990 on Shabbat Parshas Yisro the Rebbe spoke about giving Tzedaka in honor of the Rebbetzin.
He said “In regard to a real action that can be done, it is right and proper to connect the Yahrzeit by adding to and erecting institutions liluy nishmosoh. Furthermore – it is appropriate to give extra Tzeddaka close to the Yahrzeit. Best of all is if it were given in the sum of 470, the Gimatriya of the name of the deceased… and all who add to this number are considered even more praiseworthy. Not only 470 small coins, rather 470 large coins and in a larger currency.”
Ohr Chaya Seminary was established with the brachos and the encouragement of the Rebbe in 1989. At first, it was called ‘The Torah Lessons Center for Women for the Iluy Neshama of Rebbetzin Mrs. Chaya Mushka A”h.’
However, the name was too long and so it was later named Ohr Chaya with the Rebbe’s bracha. We received dozens of Brachos from the Rebbe until 3rd of Tammuz, 1994. The Rebbe greatly encouraged the institution. For example, for the gathering of the Shluchos on Chof Beis Shvat 1992 the Rebbe sent a special Bracha for Ohr Chaya.
This current campaign was actually written by the Rebbe. One can see in His words from 1990 that there’s a special Inyan in giving Tzeddaka of 470, which is the Gimatriya of Chaya Mushka, especially with different kinds of coins.
Ohr Chaya is an institute that spreads light, liveliness and joy while building more and more Chassidish Jewish homes and enriching them with the wisdom of Torah life.
