Congregation Ohel Chabad Lubavitch is continuing to better provide for many visitors to the Rebbe‘s Ohel gravesite in Queens’ Cambria Heights, while respecting the neighbors and surroundings.
The most recent plan is to place a charter bus stop on Francis Lewis Boulevard to accommodate the hundreds of visitors who visit the site each day and the thousands on special religious occasions, Queens Chronicle reported.
Rabbi Abba Refson, Director of the Ohel center, said the layover zone would accommodate 3 buses and that the Department of Transportation is considering where exactly to place it.
“Oftentimes it is not feasible to park in the front, so we wanted to create a designated area for them to make it more streamlined,” and less disruptive to the community, Refson told reporter AnnMarie Costella.
Is response to concerns by Tanya Cruz, head of Community Board 13’s Transportation Committee, Rabbi Refson said the buses would not idle at the stop, even in extreme cold or heat.
He told the newspaper that the buses would park and the drivers would come into the building or tents at at 226-20 Francis Lewis Blvd., to keep cool or stay warm until the passengers are ready to leave.
The Queens newspaper noted that the this year’s mass pilgrimage for Gimmel Tammuz “went rather smoothly. There were few if any complaints.”
