If you’re a true cholent connoisseur, you’ve probably done a cholent crawl on Thursday night, making your rounds to the grungiest spots to grab a bowl of the iconic erev-Shabbos meat, potato (and usually too many beans) concoction.
But the best cholent in Crown Heights can’t be found on Thursday night, no matter how much you beg and plead.
This particular cholent, which makes its appearance every week at the Soul House Kiddush, is an insider’s secret. In fact, many of the so-called ‘cholent snobs’ who’ve been lucky enough to get a taste have been known to return for a second (or third) helping.
*But the cholent? Well, it’s only the beginning.*
The Soul House, an unassuming Chabad House on Eastern Parkway, has become a thriving hub for the local young community, not just because of its famous cholent, but because of something much more special: a sense of belonging.
It’s a space that young people from all different backgrounds, whether they’ve grown up in Crown Heights or are new to the shchuna, feel welcomed. A place where you’re invited to stand strong in your beliefs, not compromise on your values, and maybe even meet your bashert. 😜 (almost two dozen shidduchim and counting)
The Soul House has quietly, through word of mouth, become a gathering place for people who felt lost in the hustle of Crown Heights. It’s a Chabad House that thrives on inclusion, with its weekly Shabbos morning Torah Ohr shiur attended by seminary girls, bubbies, and everyone in between, aimed at nurturing meaningful discussion, connection, and personal growth.
The Soul House consistently hosts thought-provoking, engaging events that foster community—whether it’s a comedy night, community sale, or an evening Maamar class. Each program thoughtfully designed to create an environment where people connect on a deeper level.
The Soul House is only made possible by this pair of dedicated shluchim the Engelsons whose passion for their community just won’t quit.
Whether it’s a Shabbat kiddush, a quiet moment of guidance, or simply a warm greeting at the door, they make every member feel like they belong. Not to mention stuff them with the most delicious food. (They’re Jewish parents after all)
People come for the cholent, but stay for the community, finding a space that welcomes them with open arms, inviting them to connect with their neshama in an authentic way.
In a neighborhood known for its over 100 shuls and bustling Jewish infrastructure, the Soul House stands as a testament to the power of community. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones you didn’t expect to find.
So in conclusion, yes, the cholent IS spectacular, but the real draw is the community—a place where people are not just welcomed, but where they’re given the space to grow, to learn, and to thrive as the best versions of themselves.
And while the cholent may only appear once a week, the sense of warmth, connection, and belonging never runs out.
Help keep the warmth, wisdom, and outta-this-world cholent going strong!
Donate to the Soul House campaign today, I promise there’s always room at the table for one more. (And maybe if you ask nicely, we can get you a bowl of cholent too.)
Note from the Founders
A Chabad House in Crown Heights might sound unusual—but that’s exactly what The Soul House is.
Located in the heart of Crown Heights, The Soul House has become a vibrant, beating heart of the community. It’s a place where life is celebrated daily—with constant programming, heartfelt farbrengens, Shabbos meals full of warmth, and countless opportunities to learn Torah, build meaningful relationships, meet a bashert, or simply find a quiet moment of clarity in a busy world.
Over two dozen couples (and counting—we’ve honestly lost track!) have met and married through connections made at The Soul House. We’ve had the joy of hosting their l’chaims, brisim, upsherins, baby girl kiddushes, and pidyon habens. Every time we’re honored to provide the space, and we never take that honor lightly.
Our women’s programming is thriving—monthly Rosh Chodesh gatherings, creative events, Torah study, and powerful shiurim. Shabbos lunch draws between 60 to 120 people every single week, offering not only nourishing, healthy food and warm hospitality but also the strength and support to take on deeper levels of observance. Many have chosen to keep Shabbos for the first time because they felt supported here.
We’ve hosted classes on Taharas HaMishpacha, dating with intention, and mental health workshops—all designed to nurture both spiritual and emotional growth. We do our best to celebrate Yomim Tovim and special days with dignity, beauty, and joy: deliciously catered meals, soulful music, and uplifting Torah experiences that stay with people long after they leave.
And yet—we know there is still so much more to do.
In the past, you empowered us with a generous investment into our work deeply grateful and are proud to share what your gift sowed.
As we celebrate five incredible years of impact, we’re turning to you once more. Your support fuels everything we do—from daily programs to life-changing moments—and helps us continue building a home for the Rebbe’s children.
Such a beautiful place and community!!
My favourite place in the whole Crown Heights!
Best cholent and best vibes ❤️❤️❤️
When children grow up they may stop coming to their family Shuls. The Soul House gives a space for young adults and all those who need to be apart of a community! They were the best thing to happen to crown heights!!
Exactly this!!
I have been a part of the soul house since I moved to crown heights in 2021, when it was just a small minyan. I am so grateful to have had my shabbos kallah, my husband’s ufruf, naming our daughter, and her kiddush there since. Miryam and Eli have been with me every step in my journey and I’m so so grateful to be a part of this beautiful community.
Soul house is the best!!

The soul house is legendary!
Best cholent! Best place! Best people!
A home away from home for many of our sons and daughters to go feel part of something on shabbos
The first time I’ve entered the Soul House has been in the recent months, and from day one I’ve been filled with gratitude for having been to introduced to such a welcoming place filled with so much love. Especially when Shabbos feels quiet and lonely, I know the Soul House is there – filled with warmth and a sense of community. In the middle of busy Crown Heights where it’s easy to get lost in the crowds, the Soul House is a place where I feel seen. Where I feel welcomed. Where I belong. Thank you Myriam and Eli. I’m so grateful to have been part of the soul house community during my time in crown heights! Every community needs a soul house🙌🏻🤍
The best chollent is at your homes .
Came for the cholent, left a chossid
I began to attend the soul house in 2021, back when it was a small crowd, Shuas Kollel, and a well kept secret in crown heights. This was a spot where many found community and belonging. Since then the soul house has grown exponentially as a true testament to how incredible it is and how crucial for the young community of crown heights!
For creating a space for so many of us to feel welcomed, comfortable, at home, inspired, reconnected, connected, and more❤️

I’m so happy to be part of this community and truly grateful to have such a special place as my shul. Thank you to the Engelson family for all the hard work and love they put into it
Where is tis SOUL HOUSE address please?.
Literally.
The soul house fills a need in the young single community (and beyond) of crown heights like no other place. The magic, spirituality, events, Torah, food (it’s real! Straight up nourishing hungry holy humans), and love is so special.
So proud to be apart of the soul house community! It truly feels a void for many young Chabadniks in CH who otherwise would not have a place to go to Shul and a community to call their own!
Don’t complain the youth of today have no place to grow in their yidishkeit and feel connected, the soul house is the place!
