A 15-year-old boy plunged four stories to his death when he tried to jump “like Spider-Man” from one rooftop to another while playing tag, police and witnesses said.
Tyrek Riley, who lived in East Flatbush, was playing with four other boys when he tried to leap across a 10-foot gap, from 1145 to 1153 President St., and fell at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, police said.
Tyrek was pronounced dead at the scene, an NYPD spokeswoman said. The kids were playing manhunt, a version of tag, police said.
“They’re good kids, but they’ve been doing this about a year. They just jump from roof to roof like Spider-Man,” said Nick Brown, 31, who saw the boy’s body from his fourth-floor window in 1145 President St.
“I’ve tried to warn them, but they don’t listen. It’s cold out and they don’t have nothing else to do. It was a matter of time before this happened,” he added.
Others had also tried unsuccessfully to warn the group.
“They were up on the roof jumping back and forth. I heard stomping on top of my roof. I thought it was going to cave,” said Ivorine Dixon, 41, another fourth-floor tenant of 1145 President St.
“My dad went up and told them to get off, but they kept going,” Dixon added.
After interviewing the other kids Tyrek was with, investigators believe there was no criminality involved, a police spokeswoman said.
“The NYPD would like to ask all parents, politicians, churches, adults and all other organizations to remind children of the danger of playing on rooftops,” an NYPD spokesman said.
Boys and Girls climb on the Roofs and Sukkah structures of FREE and mansions next door during davening on .Shabbosim..(thus the fathers are occupied for long periods of time).. I observe this almost every week throughout the year (except when snowing of course)… some even encourage very young siblings to join them…and All wear unsafe for climbing slippery Shabbos shoes!

#2, I think it NEEDS to be on our site so our kids do not try this.
You, as a mother, shouldn’t be scared of your kids climbing.
You, as a mother, should be scared of your kids Ch”V falling and getting injured or killed.
You, as a mother, need to either have your kids stay home Shabbos, or have a responsible person be in charge of keeping them safe.
enough said.
Yes, parents should educate their kids not to be on roofs or jump across them, and yes, parents to do their best to ensure their young children are always supervised by adults, but parental responsibility doesn’t replace building owner responsibility – especially if they are torah-observant. Make a fence on your roof is just as much a mitzva as keeping shabbos, kosher, ETC.
i totally agree with #15
There are children climbing up on the roof of 770 every shabbos.
We need someone to make sure that they don’t have access.
I , as a mother, sit home every shabbos afraid that my kids will be climbing.
movies are the source to this problem !
it really effects how you walk, speak , mindset and what you do
i think we should star being a little more careful
Couldn’t have spotted the cause any better!!!
guys we dont have to ask y did he do that we have to taker of it tell your children to be safe
moshiach now
What I find amazing is that they have been doing it for a year without anyone getting hurt! That is a big jump.
I am very sorry for the family and friends and their loss. RIP

ושאנחנו ניקח מזה אזהרת ביטחון
That is the stupidest thing I ever heard who could jump ten feet? The boy obviously wasn’t in his right mind!
My son and his friends used to jump from one roof top to another, and I told him if he doesnt stop i am going to call the cops, I feel very bad for the parents of the child, May be RIP
A child died. My condolences to his family.
This is a good (albeit tragic) warning to other children to avoid stupid risk taking.
BTW, why are your children on this website?? It’s not exactly Uncle Moishe! You be protecting your children from the internet altogether. What does a child need to know about the shidduch crises, muggings, etc.
Too many tragedies as of late. My heart goes out to this young man’s family and friends. I’m so sorry for your loss.
when will people learn its not worth risking your life to be cool?!
It’s a life of someone’s son and brother
