It isn’t likely to hear a “Mazal Tov” in the home of a family mourning the sudden and tragic passing of a son, husband, father and fellow Shliach.
But that congratulatory call was expressed as a new edition of the holy Tanya was printed at the shiva home of Rabbi Tzemach Cunin who passed away last week at the age of 43.
His wife Mrs. Ada Cunin (nee Wilschanski) and 5 children stood nearby as the button was pressed on a portable printer on Thursday, releasing newly printed pages in memory of Tzemach Yehoshua Ben Boruch Shlomo.
Leading the ceremony was his grieving father, Rabbi Shlomo Cunin, Head Shliach of the West Coast and Director of Chabad California. “Hang in there. This will soon be over,” he told his grandchildren about the imminent coming of Moshiach.
The senior Rabbi Cunin notified the crowd present that his wife Mrs. Miriam Cunin needs prayers for good health and that she was not notified about the tragic loss of her son. He asked those communicating with her not to mention the passing.
Following singing niggunum, Rabbi Tzemach’s father in law, Rabbi Zalman Wilschanski, Rosh Yeshiva of Tomchei Tmimim in Morristown, NJ, read the first chapter of Tanya, as customary.
Printing editions of Tanya was encouraged by the Rebbe to bring the light of chassidus to the location it was printed. It was the hope of the Shiva house visitors that the printing would help comfort the family.
Among the visitors on Thursday was Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, Mazkir of the Rebbe and Chairman of Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch and Machne Israel; Rabbi Efraim Mintz, Director of the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), many chassidim from the Los Angeles, California and beyond.
To accommodate the many visitors, the Misaskim organization set up a large tent in the front yard of the Shiva home at 1145 South Wetherly Drive, located behind the “770” building of Beis Chaya Mushka in Los Angeles.
