An estimated 70,000 Jews participated in the annual Brichas Hakohanim ceremony held at the Kotel in Jerusalem in honor of the holiday of Sukkos.
Hundreds of kohanim covered their faces and recited the priestly blessing as was done during the times of the Bais Hamikdash.
The renewal of this custom began 46 years ago by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Gefner, a resident of Jerusalem, based on a special merit of 300 kohanim praying near Har Habayis.
Leading the Shachris prayer was Gefner’s don R’ Mordechai Gefner. Musaf was led by the Kotel Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovich.
Israelis and many Jewish visitors then joined in prayer in a stark contrast to the recent resolution of the UNESCO agency that Jerusalem wasn’t sacred to the Jewish people.
UNESCO Director-General criticizes ‘harmful’ drive to erase Jewish ties to Temple Mount
“To deny, conceal or erase any of the Jewish, Christian or Muslim traditions undermines the integrity of the site,” UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova stated.
Unesco has perverted it’s purpose. It’s declaration is a statement that contradicts truth and reality. It is akin to saying black is white, day is night, hot is cold. They have ceased to have a meaningful function. They are saying right is wrong. Who of sound mind and upright purpose can be involved with them?
