Sylvia Carlebach, matriarch of a large Lubavitch family on Shlichus who spearheaded Jewish life in the Laurentian Mountains, passed away Tuesday, 26 Teves 5770.
She was 87.
The Canadian born Sylvia assisted her late husband Rabbi Ephraim Carlebach in founding House of Israel Congregation in Ste. Agathe Des Monts, a town in the province of Quebec.
“Back in the day, it was very unpopular to be a frum Jew,” a family member told COLlive.com.
They sent their children to Rabbinical College of Canada – Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch school for boys established in 1947.
To make ends meet, Mrs. Carlebach (nee Fried) was active in the textile industry, selling curtains for a living.
She will be remembered as a “person with a positive attitude, loving, warm and caring,” one of her grandchildren said.
But, most of all, she was proud of her many children and grandchildren assuming positions as Chabad-Lubavitch Shluchim and Jewish activists.
She made a point to remember and recognize her many descendants, even great grandchildren.
She is survived by Raizel Schmukler – Los Angeles, CA; Kuchi Kahn – London, UK; Rabbi Alex Carlebach – Johannesburg, South Africa; Rabbi Yoisef Tzvi Carlebach – Rutgers University, New Jersey; Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach – Crown Heights; and Rabbi Emanuel Carlebach – Ste. Agathe, Canada.
Some of her grandchildren serve on Shlichus in Thailand, Port Washington-NY, Moscow, Paris, Kiryat Malachi, San Deigo and Melbourne.
This past Kinus Hashluchim in New York, a group of them flew to Montreal on Motzoei Shabbos for a brief visit and returned to Brooklyn for the gala banquet.
She was buried Tuesday afternoon in Montreal.
The family is sitting Shivah at 6259 Avenue Mountain Sights, Montreal, QC, Canada. Phone: 514-731-5104.

She was not my grandmother, yet our families were connected through marriage. She was a wonderful woman with a ready smile and a warm word. She was gracious, witty and one of the most down-to-earth people you would have the privilege to know. She possessed true simchas hachayim and chochmas hachayim. In a time when it was so challenging to maintain Jewish identity, she did so with pride and resolve. What a wonderful, wonderful lady who’s presence will always be felt in the many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren she left behind. May her memory be for a blessing.
