The first ever Crown Heights-style Simchas Beis Hashoeva took place on Sukkos in Sydney, Australia.
Hosted in a blocked off street, it was the first of its genre in Sydney in decades. The event brought the lively and youthful flavour of Chol Hamoed Sukkos in the ‘shechunah’ to the streets of Sydney.
The event was very well-attended, including many neighbours from the general community, who were happy to join the celebrations and support their Jewish neighbours.
The ‘Simchas Beis in the Street’ event is set to become an annual Sukkot cornerstone, with plans already underway for expansion for next year.
The event kicked off with a children’s rally led by Rabbi Yehuda Straiton and his Sukkah Mobile, followed by communal dancing on the blocked off street, with a lively turnout of teens and young adults, as well as community members of all ages, featuring energetic music provided by the legendary DJ Haim Ayalon.
The event was organised by Menachem Spielman of Tzemach Tzedek Community Centre, with the assistance of Kesser Torah College Shluchos, Sheina Kornikh and Rivka Lubin, and Chavi Althaus, a KTC student, and photography by Sam Babus. The event was made possible thanks to the generous support and effort of community members.
