Neo Nazis and fascists draw the Nazi symbol on synagogues and Jewish centers in Europe. On Coney Island Avenue, however, it isn’t a common scene.
Except for a poster for a music event benefiting a Jewish charity.
Two Swastikas were found on Monday on a sign promoting the annual Soul II Soul 5774 concert at the Brooklyn School of Music in Crown Heights.
One Nazi symbol was drawn on the forehead of Benny Friedman, the lead singer of the evening to take place on Sunday, March 2, 2014.
Another swastika was drawn on the forehead of Shmuley Marcus of the 8th Day Band. “Jew boy” was written on the white shirt of his brother and bandmate Bentzi Marcus.
The anti Semitic graffiti was found by a Lubavitch couple on Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn, between Quentin Rd and Avenue P. “My wife and I saw it together,” the husband reported. “The poster was hanging on the street with other Jewish ads.”
The concert is organized by Chasdei Soul II Soul, a non-for-profit in Crown Heights which provides scholarships for children with special needs to receive a Jewish education.
“That’s terrible to see,” responded Sruly Meyer, Marketing Director of Aderet Music and Friedman’s promoter. “The worst part is I doubt the person that did that even fully understands the impact of that image.”
Bentzi Marcus told COLlive.com: “Hatred and bigotry will only bring out more unity and togetherness in our community. There is certainly a lot of ignorance and misinformation out there, but this just makes us more resolved to share a good and positive message with the world.”
Shmuly Goldman, producer of the concert, said: “I’m saddened and sickened by what I am seeing. Today in America, in New York, in Flatbush to see this kind of anti-Semitism indicates that unfortunately we still have a ways to go in combating hatred and bigotry.”
Goldman added: “However, nothing will stop us from continuing to serve the children with special needs. Our show will take place, and we pledge to continue working perhaps with even greater effort towards making sure that all special needs children get the Chinuch that they deserve.”
Joining Benny Friedman and the Marcus brothers on the Soul II Soul stage will be the Freilach band and the Shira choir.
