A group of parents and the Association of Jewish Camp Operators are suing Governor Andrew Cuomo over his closure of sleepaway camps this summer during the coronavirus pandemic, Gothamist reported.
The lawsuit filed by Brooklyn-based Association of Jewish Camp Operators argues the governor’s order violates their constitutional rights of the free exercise of religion and “the fundamental rights of parents to control the religious education and upbringing of their children.”
The lawsuit, filed Thursday in the Northern District of New York federal court, seeks immediate relief from the ban through a temporary restraining order that would likely allow sleepaway camps to open quickly for the summer.

ShareWhen is the lawsuit, they could just push it off for two months and that means no camp
Shareyou make a good point
ShareThey are asking for a preliminary injunction, immediate relief, or else they will be irreparably harmed. However, it usually takes at least a week, maybe two, but if they win, camp can be ordered to open immediately.
ShareThe point is not to open camps
ShareThey should have also added dr howard Zucker to the lawsuit because he was the one that made the decision
Sharethis is 100% legal so no one say anything about us making a chillul Hashem.
ShareNot only is it not a chilul Hashem, but it is also so important for Yidden to stand up for themselves and their rights to be able to operate in a way the community feels it is best served. When Jews stand back and let people push them around, nothing good happens.
Finally, taking a stand. ALL TOGETHER.
ShareWhen is the lawsuit? The lawsuit could happen after summer. One year without camps is not the end of the world. The parents dealt with their children since March, two months won’t be bad. There are other camps in America that are open.
ShareYou obviously don’t have kids at home
ShareFIRST: I think all camps should be allowed to open, with proper precautions of course!
I am not so clear on what NYS law says and how the legal system works. Would someone please clarify here how this disallowal of camps opening in NYS has anything to do with RELIGION? (That is the grounds of the lawsuit:)
Just askin’ — NOT trying to make a case in favor of the governor: IN NO WAY DO I AGREE WITH CUOMO!
ShareStopping “Camp Baseball” and “Camp Soccer” from opening doesn’t have any religious impact, therefore they can’t bring religious education as a reason why they shouldn’t be shut down.
ShareCamps that provide religion on the other hand, have this added reason why they are not allowed to be shut down.
