Crown Heights residents, activists and elected officials gathered for the naming of Carroll Street between Brooklyn and New York Avenues as “Sarah and Michoel Behrman Way” on Sunday.
R’ Michoel and Mrs. Sarah Behrman obm were remembered as a couple who each found their roots in Crown Heights in the early 70s, with both becoming followers of the Rebbe, of righteous memory.
The Behrmans resided on Carroll between Brooklyn and New York since 1983, and were the longest Chassidic family living on the block. The many lives they helped was a reason for the New York City Council to co-name the street in their tribute.
Sarah worked as an advocate and case manager at the HASC organization which services children with special needs. Michoel was the director of Operation Survival, a drugs prevention program under the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE).
“I am proud to honor the legacies of Sarah and Michoel Behrman with this street co-naming,” said Council Majority Leader Laurie A. Cumbo, who sponsored the co-naming bill.
“Their commitment to the Crown Heights community and their critical work to advance education and civil rights is a model for all of us as we aim to strengthen and improve our communities,” she said.
Attending the event were Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, State Senator Jesse Hamilton, Assemblymember Diana Richardson, New York City Council Majority Leader Laurie A. Cumbo, Council Member Dr. Mathieu Eugene, Councilmember Kalman Yeger, Pinny Ringel, Senior Liaison of Mayor Bill De Blasio, District Leader Geoffrey A. Davis, Nathan Rosenberg from the office of Council Member Chaim Deustch, Kings County Judge Loren Baily, and former congressional candidate Adem Bunkeddeko, NYPD Liaison and community activist Devorah Halberstam, members of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council and representatives from Chabad-Lubavitch Headquarters.
Rabbi Shea Hecht, chair of NCFJE, opened the program with Tehilim, Cantor Shloime Rabin led the crowd in “G-d bless America,” family friend Mendy Simon sounded the shofar, and the Behrmans’ niece Amy Baily shared greetings from the family.
“I am humbled by the outpouring of love and support from the community and elected officials,” Yaacov Behrman, Michoel and Sarah Behrman’s son who organized the event which was produced by Levi Dray, told COLlive. “It means a lot to me that my parents’ good work will be remembered,” he said.
