During the first week of school, students at Lamplighters Yeshivah got a real lesson on time.
A long black rope stretched across the full length of an Eastern Parkway block. A group of children stood at one end of the rope gathered around their Rebbe. Each child held something in his hands- a Menorah, Torah, Mishnah, Shulchan Aruch and the like. In a gentle, captivating voice, the teacher told the story of the world, beginning with Creation, running all through ancient times, the medieval era, all the way through up to the modern era. The Rebbe explained what happened at every key juncture of history and laid down a picture on the timeline to signify that era, “During the Babylonian times, the miracle of Purim occurred…”. Then, a student carefully placed the Megillah on the timeline in that spot. The children could see- and feel- how far along on the timeline of our history the miracle of Purim happened in relation to other key events they already experienced on the timeline, including Matan Torah, the life of Avraham Avinu and Creation.
The Rebbes and students continued on this path of living Jewish history until they reached our days- the Baal Shem Tov, the Rebbeim, the Holocaust, Jews returning to the Land of Israel, our Rebbe coming to America- and stood at the very end of the length of the rope, now red, at the end of the era of exile. “Children, look back at all the black rope behind you. That is all the time, all the generations of Jewish History upon which we stand… Here we are, at the very end of 6,000 years, entering the times of Moshiach.”
The students of Lamplighters Yeshivah listened entranced, as the comprehension of the magnitude of time, of the generations which built up over time to ready the world for Moshiach, bring them to the point where they stand at the last little bit of rope – their place in the world – beckoning a new, G-dly era.
Wow so proud, yashar koach Yochevd Sidof and all Lamplhiter team!
That’s really brilliant
Mark my words: next year every school in Crown Heights will be doing this lesson!
Thank you, Lamplighters (and Mariah Montessori, and Rabbi Rietti, and all you Jewish Montessori/”Darko” schools out there and the leaders of the greater Jewish Montessori movement) for tools which make Judaism come alive!
And thank you, Moshe and Rivkah Schack, for bringing these tools to Crown Heights.
This lesson is a classic Montessori lesson that’s meant to show our ‘small’ people are in relation to the long history of the world and all the creations. R’ Rietti adapted it to be a timeline of Jewish history, which Jewish Montessori schools use as an invaluable tool. The Schacks tweaked the language of the presentation and the materials, and also include a segment of history relevant to Chassidim and our mission in this world.
This school is really thinking outside the box and making history relevant! Can there be an alternative to putting the pictures of Rabbeim on the floor?
Not taking away credits from the teacher who implemented this lesson, for all those who are looking to do the same, You can go to Rabbi Rietti’s course and he will teach you how and give you the materials to teach this lesson. I am NOT looking to pass judgment, but If the teacher got this idea from Rabbi Rietti’s course, as a sign of recognition his name is should have been mentioned in the article. The teacher surely deserve credit for implementing such a wonderful idea, But hakorasIf hatov should be given to Rabbi Rietti and his name should… Read more »
Wow- what a terrific hands on experience
so happy they had the foresight to bring along stools to place the seforim on. I’m very impressed. What age does this yeshiva cater too?
Good job!
Kudos to this Educator who took the time and effort to make this lesson meaningful to his students. They will surely remember this class for years to come.
Rabbi Rietti has been advocating such hands on teaching for years. I remember Rabbi Rietti doing a similar presentation at my son’s school – Darko in L.A. last year. The kids loved how they where able to experience and be a part of Jewish history. Rabbi Rietti has a beautiful program which he sells on his website: Jewishinspiration.com to help teach Jewish history in such a hands on way.
I am crying right now, knowing how much faith I have in our school and how there is so much to look forward to in my child’s development. Thank you G-d for this school!
it makes it real instead of all just being theoretical.
This is excellent! Yashar Koach Lamplighters!
