Yoeli Horowitz, conductor and arranger of the Shirah Choir, recently celebrated the Bar Mitzvah of his son Asher and planned something special for it.
Together with his brother Shlomo Zalman Horowitz and Mendy Hershkowitz, they presented a stirring rendition of the Poltava Nigun.
The melody is attributed to Rabbi Yaakov Mordechai Bespalov, the Rav of Poltava in Ukraine and one of the known chassidim of the Rebbe Maharash and the Rebbe Rashab.
The Poltava Rav would sing this melody during his soul-filled davening. Its notes were written down as Niggun 45 in Chabad’s Sefer Hanigunim. The Horowitz brothers together with an orchestra and their choir sang the nigun together.
