Sisters of special needs children enjoyed a pizza party and exciting activities this past Sunday at the Jewish Children’s Museum.
“It was just so special,” said Chaiky Raichman, age 10, echoing the sentiments of her peers who were given the special attention they so desperately need.
“As a sister myself, I appreciate the challenges these children face, and how important such events can be in their lives,” says Mussia Goldman, a volunteer. Goldman is a proud member of the new Friendship Circle Division, FC Alumni and Friends.
When the new group opened just a few months ago, organizers couldn’t have known it would blossom into an unrelenting force for good that would envelop Crown Heights. Some 200 volunteers joined and have tremendously assisted children with special needs and their families.
Like Goldman, many young women returning from seminary were eager to rejoin Friendship Circle and assist in any way they could, according to Mrs. Chaya Eckhaus, Friendship Circle Director.
“What has happened was far beyond my wildest imaginations. It has taken on a life of its own.”
The group has taken the initiative to create many programs that not only help special needs children, but also their exhausted family members.
“Volunteers drive, cook, befriend and do just about anything,” says Eckhaus. “With our new volunteers, whatever a mother asks for, we will make it happen.”
A monthly support group meets in the Smetana home, where mothers can share ideas, unburden their hearts, and talk amongst women who can truly appreciate their unique circumstances.
“This program does wonders for us mothers,” says Nechama, “We share the good and bad, we laugh and cry. We share stories and swap medical info. But mostly, it’s about knowing that we’re there for one another.”
The alumni have also made more than 200 hospital visits, some staying overnight or even for a full Shabbos. “My son was unable to leave his bed for 24 hours following a medical procedure,” says Mrs. Esti Rosenblatt. “I cannot thank the volunteers who visited him enough.”
In a matter of months, the division has grown so much, that the Friendship Circle has hired Chaya Chein to direct and coordinate its events and projects.
Eckhaus gushes with gratitude toward the volunteers, while reiterating the need for continued support. “We have many exciting ideas in the pipeline. Shabbatons, FC kids clubs such as art, cooking and baking, Karate, dance, and woodworks. Monthly mom’s nights out, Teen Clubs, Hospital visitation packages, monthly newsletters, fundraising events, and so much more are also planned. It’s incredible what these volunteers have accomplished on their own accord.”

FC was such a big part of my life while I was in high school. I visited my friend every single week for 5 years and was at every single fc program. When I graduated high school and went away to seminary, leaving FC behind was one of the saddest things for me and I couldn’t wait for the day when I’d come back home and bring FC back into my life. When Chaya’le contacted me about FC Alumni & Friends there was no question about it-I was in! FC has a very special place in my heart-as a volunteer… Read more »
The creation and accomplishments of the FC Alumni has shown me many things. It showed me just how important the FC is. It showed me that more manpower really can take an organization to the next level. And it showed me that I can still make a difference.
Thank you so much for all you do. When Shmuel was in the hospital for an EEG you sent two very sweet girls who really helped to make it better for him. He was not allowed to leave his bed for 24hrs! To have visitors was a real treat! Just like the illness effects the whole family and not just the child, FC is not only about the child. Chayle and the amazing volunteers are working to take care of the whole family. The young mothers group is a great outlet for all of us in the same “boat” to… Read more »
On behalf of all the moms involved in fc moms group wed like to thank the alumni for putting together such a necessary and meaningful event. We have become a little community thanks to you! Friendship circle gives the moms some relief time, noone can understand how much time a special needs child takes out of you, eating, sleeping, bathing, playing. when these girls come to our house for that one hour, we are free to either make supper, help otherkids in the family, or just make phone calls that are waiting to be made.. thank you friendship circle. ”the new program for the moms is amazing, us moms get time to talk and say whatever is on our mind, and give each other the shoulder to lean on.. the sister club is amazing for… Read more »

i wanted to write how much i appreciate the moms circle.after having my son get a diagnosis my whole life changed and i needed a support system, which is not easy to find even in secular circles.i found a support group in manhatten but it lacked the frum atmosphere and the people did not have simlar back rounds or religious convictions as me so i couldnt relate to them.now friendship circle has once a month meeting for women in ch and i look forwards to it each time.it gives me an oppertunity to be with other moms who know the challenges… Read more »
I find it impossible to put down on paper the immense gratitude I owe to the Frienship Circle volunteers who have helped me, and whom continue to help me in these most trying times. What can I say to the volunteers who allow me to leave my 6 month old baby in the hospital to go care for my other children, knowing that my baby will be loved, held, and touched as I am away. My other children most undoubtedly would want to say thank you for allowing their mommy and tatty to leave the hospital to come home to… Read more »
