NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) – New York City public schools were closed on Friday as a snow storm brought heavy snow, strong winds and bitterly cold temperatures to the region.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in New York issued winter storm warnings for the tristate area through Friday at 1 p.m. A blizzard warning is in effect for Long Island because blowing snow could cause white-out conditions.
The winter storm warning is in effect for Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, including all of New York City.
Significant snow, sleet, or ice is expected to accumulate and impact travel.
A blizzard warning includes sustained or frequent winds of 35 mph or higher with considerable falling or blowing snow that reduces visibility to a 1/4 of a mile or less. These conditions are expected for a minimum of three hours, according to the NWS.
Forecasters expect 8 or more inches of snow, winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, temperatures in the single digits to teens, and visibility at times to be limited to one quarter to one half mile.
New York City’s Bergen Beach community in Brooklyn saw about 7 inches of snow overnight. Bayville in Nassau County reported more than 7 inches. Upton in Suffolk County had more than 6 inches on the ground.
Westchester County had smaller amounts of snow reported.
By 4 a.m., 6.5 inches of snow had fallen in Mildford, Conn. and 5 inches in Darien.
In New Jersey, 8 inches had been reported in Paramus and 6 inches in Clark.
“The accumulating snow, along with areas of blowing snow, will be capable of producing hazardous travel conditions,” the NWS said.
The heavy snow and blustery conditions has forced the Port Authority of NY and NJ to temporarily suspend flights at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday.
The suspension began at 6:12 a.m. and was expected to last until 8:30 a.m.
The airport terminals remain open.
Thousands of flights are canceled across the country due to the storm which is expected to dump nearly a foot of snow in some parts of the Tristate region.
Crown Heights school closures include Bais Rivkah, Bnos Menachem, Darchei Menachem, Preschool and pre1-A of Oholei Torah and Preschool and Pre 1-A of Lubavitcher Yeshiva. Both boys elementary schools remain open with no transportation provided. Ohr Menachem is open.
