Over 100 people attended the 1st Yartzeit of Zev and Rochel Simons OBM in Crown Heights. The evening began with words of inspiration by Rabbi Yoni Johnson who explained the importance of keeping the past and remembering it for the future, and how the children that were taught by Zev and Rochel are their future, for generations to come. He added that we all have the responsibility to continue to take on Hachlatos in their memory.
Tehillim was said by everyone and Rabbi Amzalak mentioned the last few moments he spent with Zev the day before the accident, as well as other memories of both Zev and Rochel.
Mordechai Simons read a letter prepared by his father, Zev’s brother, which outlined the special qualities of both Zev and Rochel OBM. Rabbi Mendel Itkin ended by saying Kaddish.
The evening then moved into a farbrengen, with words of chizuk by Rabbi Tzvi Telsner and Rabbi Chaim Serebryanski. Bochurim and Shluchim that were in Sydney over the past 10 years came to show their respect and gratitude to both Zev and Rochel.
Everyone was encouraged to visit the website www.simonssefertorah.com to participate in the sefer torah if they have not done so yet. Recordings of last year’s speeches are available on the site as well.
