Sholem Dovber Benchimol, a graduate of Chabad who was an avid soccer player and proudly wore his yarmulka to every game, tragically passed away on Thursday morning, 6 Iyar 5780.
He was 17.
He is the youngest son of Rabbi Yossi and Devorah Benchimol, leaders of Beit Rambam, an Orthodox Sephardic Latin Congregation in Sunny Isles, Florida. They previously served as Chabad Shluchim and teachers in Argentina, Columbia and Guatemala.
Sholem graduated the Lubavitch Educational Center (LEC) in Miami Beach and was now learning in the Scheck Hillel Community School in North Miami Beach.
He was the captain of his soccer team and was a positive influence on his friends and those who knew him. “He was full of life and grace,” says Rabbi Yossi Srugo, a friend of the family and a mohel in Miami. “He was one of those neshamos that Hashem sends for a short time to bring life and beauty into this world.”
This past Sunday, Sholem went for a bike ride during which he was struck by a vehicle that put him in a coma. Family and friends gathered outside the Aventura Hospital & Medical Center to recite Tehillim for his recovery. The name Chaim was added.
“We will never understand why Hashem does these things,” his father commented about the tragic news. “I’m sure Chaim Sholem Dovber took the thousands of Tehilim from all of you to the heavenly world. It shows that here on earth, in a world of so much darkness, the Jewish people are more united than ever.”
