There’s a new food truck driving around Downtown Brooklyn and it’s actually kosher – thanks to Shluchim Eliyahu and Shaindy Raskin.
The Raskins run Chabad of Brooklyn Law School and noticed that there were many Jewish students from the 5 local universities who did not have any kosher food options available in the area.
“Today there are no Kosher options in the entire Downtown Brooklyn area,” said Shaindy Raskin. “There are also no wholesome, gourmet food carts or trucks in the area – for Kosher eaters and non-Kosher eaters alike,” she said.
Combining a community service with a great opportunity for outreach, the Raskins put in motion a plan to provide a hot and delicious kosher meal for their students.
The two created JJ’s Holy Cow Kosher Food truck, offering up a menu of beef burgers, avocado burgers and breakfast burgers, along with salads and sides.
By using natural, minimally processed beef and serving handcrafted burgers prepared fresh daily, JJ’s Holy Cow is looking to “shift consumer expectations of what a food cart can offer, as well as provide tens of thousands of Kosher consumers with great food,” Raskin said.
They decided on the food truck venue “due to a large number of kosher consumers in the area, numerous restaurants have opened and subsequently closed over the past 27+ years,” Raskin said. “This is due to the steep overhead prices in Downtown Brooklyn. The cost per month to rent out a small restaurant space amounts to a few thousand dollars at best.”
Their handcrafted food products are made from vegetarian fed, clean, 100% meat, and they offer vegan options as well.
