For the first time in many years, the ‘Tahalucha’ walks to New York area Shuls and Chabad centers may not be happening this year.
It has been a tradition, encouraged by the Rebbe, for Chassidim and bochurim to walk from Crown Heights to all 5 boroughs to bring joy and dance with local Jews.
This year, due to Covid-19 concerns, Lubavitchers are being asked not to make the Yom Tov trek.
In a public letter released on Wednesday, Rabbi Shimon Hecht wrote:
Congregation B’nai Jacob of Park Slope and Congregation B’nai Avraham of Brooklyn Heights would truly like to thank you for all the years that you have come to bring the joy of Simchas Torah to our shul and community.
To avoid an unnecessary walk, we would like to let you know that due to the Covid-19 health situation, we will NOT be having normal hakafos in our shuls.
So please, there is no need to come to Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights this year on Simchas Torah.
Once again, thank you for your love, support, and concern. We look forward to dancing with you in the coming years.
Rabbi Shlomo Kugel made a similar request in a Hebrew letter on behalf of Chabad and Shuls of the Upper Westside of Manhattan and the Bronx.
Thank You to Rabbis Raskin & Hecht for leading the way and showing compassion and responsibility in the face of an unprecedented situation. Brownstone Brooklyn is lucky to have you leading the way and representing the rebbe proudly!!
No one went on shavous or pesach either
