Shlucha Laya Slavin, director of Our Big Kitchen in Sydney, Australia, was one of the recipients of the annual Woollahra Citizenship Awards, held over zoom due to the pandemic.
Slavin is known as the driving force behind the well-known Chessed project of ‘Our Big Kitchen’ an organization that feeds thousands every week.
Slavin is known for her dedication to the project, and her efforts were saluted once again with this award for her contribution to the community.
In her comments, Laya said she was accepting the award on behalf of the thousands who volunteer and, “while some may see this as a pat on the back, as Shluchim, we see this as a push to go forward and do more,” she said.
Laya encouraged the community to add “Vitamin V” – V for volunteering, quoting Eddie Jaku, a holocaust survivor who passed away this week in Sydney, who said that nothing brings greater happiness than helping others.
