Rabbi Yisrael Goldberg, Director of Chabad of Rechavia on King George Street in Jerusalem, was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday after feeling a severe burn in his eyes.
Rabbi Goldberg experienced the pain after entering his Chabad center in the morning and was taken for treatment at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem for treatment.
Security cameras installed at Chabad showed an unknown man walking over to the entrance of the center and spraying what appears to be hazardous material. Rabbi Goldberg said that a preliminary investigation revealed that it was a toxic substance.
Police have opened an investigation and are coordinating an effort to locate the suspect.
Rabbi Yaakov Halperin, who represents Chabad in the Jerusalem Municipality, said, “As one who is exposed to all the activities of the 35 Chabad houses scattered in the capital and is well involved in the special activity of Rabbi Goldberg who spreads Jewish light and warmth in the heart of the city in the Rehavia neighborhood, this case is very worrying.
“One thing I am sure of, that this case, will only lead to strengthening and momentum in Chabad’s activities, beginning with the beautiful Lag B’Omer processions that are about to take place and will join “all Jewish children together.”
“I wish Rabbi Goldberg a speedy recovery and continued great success in all his wonderful activities,” Halperin said.
