An interesting meeting took place this past Friday at the national ceremony marking the 18th anniversary of the German reunification.
Rabbi Shlomo Bistritzky, Chabad Shliach in the city of Hamburg, received a warm welcome from the German President Horst Koehler.
Many of the country’s elite attended the event, including the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel.
German reunification took place on October 3, 1990, when the five re-established states of the German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic of Germany, and Berlin was united into a single city-state.
COL obtained a photo of Bistritzky and Koehler, but did not receive information of their conversation.
The President is considered a good friend of the Jewish Community in Germany and visited Israel some 3 years ago. In that visit, Koehler spoke in the Israeli Knesset parliament, switching between German and Hebrew.
