Rabbi Zushe Winner, Shliach in Brighton Beach, NY, was invited to officiate at the lighting of the Menorah at the Chanukah Party of Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Each year Bloomberg hosts his festive Chanukah party at the Jewish Heritage Museum in Battery Park in Manhattan, where city officials, leaders of Jewish communities and Jewish organizations in New York and supporters join to celebrate the holiday.
This year, the Mayor’s office wanted to honor individuals and institutions that were hurt by Hurricane Sandy.
Rabbi Winner’s Chabad House on Ocean Parkway and the Seabreeze Jewish Center synagogue were both devastated by the hurricane.
The synagogue still needs hundreds of thousands of dollars to become functional and return to full service. Meanwhile, services are being held at the Chabad House.
Rabbi Moishe Winner and Rabbi Shimmy Silver are presently coordinating the traditional Chanukah programming provided by the Chabad House, catering to the spiritual needs of the Russian Jewish Community. Thousands of homes are being visited, public lightings organized and Chanukah parties celebrated.
