Chabad on Campus serving the student community of Leeds in the North of England has acquired new premises.
On Friday Rabbi Michoel Danov and his wife received the keys to the center housing their Chabad house and private residence, located in the Headingley district of the Leeds city center. The building, formerly a nurses’ training college, is ideally suited to Chabad on Campus activities. The Victorian-style facade fronts a very spacious building, ideal for student programs.
“There are rooms which are in great condition, needing almost no work to make them suitable for the students,” said Rabbi Danov to COLlive. “Others will require some work. We have plans for a 24 hour drop-in center, cafeteria, computer facilities, guest rooms for Shabbos visitors to the area, a Shul and a Mikvah.”
Leeds has 2 major universities, which are attended by over fifteen hundred Jewish students from all parts of the UK. In the two years since the arrival of Rabbi and Mrs. Danov, hundreds of those students have enjoyed shiurim, programs and their legendary hospitality, renowned throughout the city.
‘Farbrengen’ is now a familiar word to the students, for many have experienced at least one on some occasion or another. And although the Chabad House is less than a week old, there have been three there already. It is noticeable how the students see the Chabad house as their own and are as excited about it as Rabbi Danov.
“Rabbi Danov is unique,” said one student who lives in Moortown, “in that I can turn up at any time of day or night and he’ll make time for me. I arrived once with a friend 2:30 in the morning and he was already in bed. He leaned out of the window, saw it was us and came down to look after us. He makes us feel so welcome.”
With such dedication the Leeds students know they have more than a friend in their Campus Rabbi – they feel part of the great big family of Chabad.
The Chabad House was purchased with the help of Mr. David Slager whose generous donation helped start this fantastic project.
