Mendy Sacho, owner of Sacho’s Kapotas in Crown Heights, is denying claims made by a Monsey Shatnez laboratory that his Kapotas contain Shatnez.
A letter from the Monsey Shatnez Laboratory circulating on social media claims that Shatnez was found in the Kapota sold at Primo Hatters on Kingston Avenue, stating that “its collar was reinforced with a linen canvas.”
Sacho says the laboratory contacted him, “accusing me that every Kapota in my store has Shatnez.”
“Not taking this accusation likely, we took this Kapota to have it checked by our local Shatnez checker, Ezra Cohen at Regency Cleaners, who’s been checking for more than 20 years,” Sacho said.
Sacho said Cohen checked more than 10 kapotas from the same run, and said that none of them contained Shatnez.
“We then took that Kapota in question, removed the Kosher label and had it checked again, and we were informed that 1,000,000 percent, this Kapota contains no Shatnez,” Sacho says.
He also says his company regularly does random checks of their Kapotas and always suggests to the customer to have their garments checked themselves as an extra precaution.
“We continue to offer that if you do find Shatnez in any garment purchased by us we will replace or remove it,” Sacho says.
“One should never wear any garment without having it checked, even if it’s purchased from a Jew,” he reminds customers.
Update:
Ezra Cohen, Crown Heights Shatnez expert, checked the Kapota in question again on Wednesday, both with a machine and without, Sacho told COLlive.
Cohen’s verdict is that the Kapota is 100% Shatnez free, telling Sacho that, “there is something there that looks a little bit like Shatnez, but it is not, and an inexperienced Shatnez checker could make that mistake,” he said.
I also learned shatnez testing by Rosenberger, worked in the lab for a few years.
There was a din torah between the willamsburgh 203 lee ave shatnez lab and the International shatnez testers based in Lakewood. The psak was that the Lakewood based shatnez is bigger experts in identifying shatnez, and their findings are binding.
So have Lakewood International shatnez testers lab make the decision. I hear they did decide that it is indeed shatnez.
Crown Heights shatnez tester? that’s something new.
Their Rabbonim say in the name of the Tzemach Zedek that the shatnez is botul.
So in essence, it does have shatnez, but in Crown Heights, that’s not considered non-kosher shatnez.
Every one is making it sound like it s just a good thing to check .
It’s an obligation because each batch can be reinforced with different material
And one kapote doesn’t give a chazokoh to the other
Because each is a different scrap of material
I made the trip to Flatbush To check
I trust Sacho and his store / Shaatnez checking 100%
Sounds like the guy in Monsey was looking for drama
Just as we should be careful with shatnez we must be SO careful before hitting send… especially if it involves someone else’s reputation and/or livelihood! Thank you COL for bringing clarity.
Clearly it was a mistake. The very same garment in question was re-checked numerous times but Monsey labs Refuses to agree that they made a mistake .
It’s not a matter of paskening halacha; it’s a matter of determining the metzius. Rabbonim are not trained to identify Shatnez fibers, experienced Shatnez checkers are. The question is just who is more experienced and who do you trust? Is it possible that one of the checkers made a mistake?
Take the Kapotes To A Real Forensic Laboratory That the Federal Government Trusts when they need to do a real investigation, and then you will know the truth if it is shatnes or not shatnes and who of the Boidkim Knows What they are talking about and who Doesn’t Know what they are Talking about.
This is a disgusting and probably false rumor orchestrated by somebody who doesn’t like to see other people doing better & succeding. The guy has shown all proof + would you think a second that Mendy Sacho would be crazy and not triple check with his factories that shatnez wasn’t done? So so disgusting. I will still buy Kapotas from him and will send more referrals – end of the story
About 20 years ago i went overseas to yeshiva shlichus from crown heights. I told Ezra what city i was going to. Ezra sent samples to lab and they were found shatnez after i had left overseas. Ezra went out of his way and tracked down shliach( i didnt give him contact details) and sent him an urgent fax to contact me that i shouldnt wear the suits. In the end i threw out one suit and had another rechecked and shatnez removed when i returned.
I have known Mendy for over 20 years. He is one of the most honest, authentic people I have ever met and a huge baal chessed and baal tzedokah. It is really pathetic that someone would attempt to beshmutz his name. Absolutely appalling behavior.
So in the name of being “frum” it’s ok to embarrass someone and go after their Parnassah? Disgusting! I have known the owner of Primo Hatters my entire life and can assure you that he is an “ehrliche yungerman” who is tying to make the community a better place by serving the sartorial needs of the rebbe’s community both in CH and everywhere else. Many, Many shluchim benefit by the largess of the store owner.
The owner just documented his priority of making sure his line is Shatnez Free. He has been selling his fine Kapatos in Crown Heights for many years and I am sure this was and is his top priority.
Seem like a false rumor spread by a competitor
Ezra has been checking shatnez in crown heights for more then 25 years. He learnt from the lab in Williamsburg. I have a kapota from sacho, great quality and no shatnez.
AST
Did you contact the shaatnez checker before posting what he allegedly said.
I did speak to him and he gave a different report!
Bh
Can we trust Monsey? Perhaps they’ve been eating Monsey chickens… 🐓
Could we get a respected Lubavitcher rov to pasken on this
First beer. Now Kapotes! אוי מה היה לנו
Why not check it at the Shatnez lab in Williamsburgh
