Taking a break from the impeachment fighting going on in Washington, D.C., the Minority Leader of the United States Senate, NY’s Senior Senator Chuck Schumer will be joining thousands of revelers at NY’s largest Chanukah celebration and have the honor of lighting Brooklyn’s Largest Menorah. Joining Mr. Schumer will be the CEO of Investors Bank Mr. Kevin Cummings. Senator Schumer is the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in the USA.
Due to recent anti-Semitic attacks, organizers of this event have met with the NYPD to ensure the safety of all. Captain Jason Hagestad of the 78th Precinct guaranteed that there will be a visible, increased security detail for this event.
“The Menorah is specifically lit at night for the purpose of illuminating our dark times,” said Rabbi Shimon Hecht, Director of Chabad of Park Slope. “No matter how dark it is outside, a candle of G‑dly goodness will transform the darkness itself into light.”
The event begins at 4:00 pm with a live kickoff concert featuring talented Jewish artist Yehuda Green. A Recipient of a Lifesaving Bone Marrow Donation Will Meet their Donor for the First time at the Menorah lighting as well.
Due to the height of the huge menorah, the gold colored steel structure will be lit using a special 60-foot boom lift. Kerosene lanterns with specially designed glass chimneys shelter the Chanukah lights from the outdoor elements.
Parking will be available on a first come first serve basis.
Brooklyn’s Largest Menorah is a project of the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE) and Chabad of Park Slope.
