By Rivka Huberman and Naomie Abergel – Students at Chaya Aydel Seminary
As another example of Chassidishe outreach in South Florida, my fellow students and I, of the Chaya Aydel Seminary, will be leading a Yud Shvat Farbrengen for children (boys and girls) ages 5-12, Thursday night, at 6:15 PM, at the Seminary, located at 1295 East Hallandale Bch Blvd.
The Farbrengen is another opportunity for the South Florida community to benefit from the efforts of the Chaya Aydel Seminary. In the five months since we’ve arrived, we have gone on weekly Mivtzaim trips, visited nursing homes, conduct weekly one on one Torah learning sessions with women and girls, and have participated in many key Peulos (programs) that benefit Jews throughout South Florida. We are very proud to help many Chabad Houses and our local community on so many special occasions, such as Yud Shvat, and we are even more delighted to know that our intense learning program in the month preparing for Yud Shvat, earned us a “bonus” of a special trip and getaway.
Seminary is the year in life that most girls dream about for years. They hear stories from their mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins and friends’ years and you can hardly wait for your turn, your year.
We got here in September, and the amazing staff at Chaya Aydel Seminary had incredible plans for us. Let me give you a little preview to two days in Seminary, but don’t forget, words don’t do it justice.
One day last week, we woke up with a text message from Mrs. Lebovics saying ” Good morning! Surprise trip today! 🙂 please bring a sweater and camera when u come today”. You have never seen so many girls get out of bed so fast. Each one of us ran from one room to the next to make sure everyone was up and got the text. We ran to school, had davening and found out that we were going on a trip to the Everglades. So we all piled into the van and drove down to the Everglades where we got on an airboat ride and saw real alligators in their natural habitats. It was another surprise “nurturing experience” by the Lebovics, who seem to always get the best out of us and from all their students over the ten years that the Florida seminary is in existence.
Classes at Chaya Aydel Seminary are something to wake up in the morning for. We have 17 teachers, and each one of them intrigues and inspires us in a different way. We always have questions, and they always have answers. Our classes are credited, so we even get college credits while we are here. With classes ranging from Tanya to Educational Psychology, there’s something for everyone. Once a week we also have a cooking class, a cake decorating class, or a jewelry making class, which is always fun.
On Wednesday we had a regular day of classes. Tanya of the day, and then Bayis Yehudi where we discuss the typical topics in a Bayis Yehudi class but also learn how to make it practical and bring it in our daily lives. Practical Halacha is an exciting class. One girl prepares every week and we learn the Halachos on different practical subjects and we end up going off topic with our crazy questions and branch out to many different subjects. Another great class is Da Ma Shetashiv, where we talk about questions that people in the world could ask us and what we should be answering them as Lubavitch Chassidim. Of course, we studied the Maamor Basi L’Gani in depth.
Every program is about what you make of it, and at Chaya Aydel Seminary, not only are we motivated to make something of it, but we are encouraged to make it ourselves. They give us the option and the confidence to get involved, create our own programs, think, question and grow to the best of our abilities, and to strive to live in the ways of the Rebbe.
I wish that every girl going into Seminary is as fufilled and inspired as we are here, this year at Chaya Aydel Seminary.
