Due to growing anti-Semitism in France, the Chabad of South Broward is raising money to try to bring at least 10 young Jewish women from France (and other European countries) to its Chaya Aydel Seminary for the upcoming school year.
“Anti-Semitism has been on the rise in Europe, especially in France, for many years,” said Chabad Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus. “But, it has gotten even worse during this latest conflict between Israel and Hamas. The anti-Israel and anti-synagogue mob behavior is scary. The latest wave of anti-Semitism puts the lives of so many French Jews in danger.”
Tennenhaus said the Chaya Aydel Seminary — in its 13th year as Florida’s only Chabad-Lubavitch teaching seminary for young Jewish women — has already had a relationship with students from France, but this is the first time it is taking such a pro-active stance to bring in as many new students from Europe as it can.
“We have a close relationship with the Jewish community in France. They say it is not safe to go to and from synagogue. The parents are so happy to send their children to South Florida to further their Jewish education in safety without the fear of being attacked by Islamic extremists,” Tennenhaus said.
Tuition cost — including room and board, travel and books — is $20,000 per student. The Chabad of South Broward hopes to raise at least $200,000 for this effort, as most of the young women are from impoverished homes.
Tennenhaus said: “We are asking generous people who value the safety of the Jewish people, and the value of higher Jewish education, to help. Time is of the essence, as we need time to secure visas through Homeland Security.”
