Dear Anash,
Rosh Hashana is still a few weeks away and in the streets here in Crown Heights you can almost touch the spirit of Rosh Hashana.
The very air seems charged. The wail of the Shofar the scent of honey cake, the white posters with thick black type calling for charity, prayer and repentance- the approach of the days of awe is impossible to miss.
But in small apartments scattered across the neighborhood there are families that feel the upcoming holidays not only in their hearts, but also in their pocket.
Yomtov means major expenses. Fish, chicken, meat, pomegranates, vegetables, dairy and honey. Even a new pair of shoes for the children. For poor families, preparing for a month of holidays is challenging. For widows, it can be a crisis.
Mrs. Devorah Scheiner’s Yom Tov Fund helps single mothers’, widows, needy families and children with special needs year-round and now with the annual Rosh Hashana distribution.
The distribution has been helping Crown Heights families for over 25 years. I am writing today to join us in this holy work.
There are really families that considered chicken a luxury. There are children who never wore a brand new item of clothing -in their life- or a new pair of proper fitted shoes. Please allow our truck to come full.
Whether summer or winter, Mrs. Scheiner is always working. Not in a fancy office with a swivel chair but from a wooden chair at her kitchen table with her open books most of the day.
Notwithstanding her health complications, she sees the community’s needs and acts upon it. Every penny goes straight to the vendors where she purchases from.
Her greatest reward is seeing the truck stopping in front of her house curbside and the boxes being unloaded. Most times she even has tears in her eyes.
Take part in the $75,000 Rosh Hashana distribution. To donate online, visit chcentral.org/donate (Every dollar raised goes directly for food with no overhead).
Thanking you in advance. May you be signed and blessed with a good year!
From a person who has been helping her with the distribution for many many years
goooooooooo bubby we love u sooo much and r sooo proud of u:)
Many need but are to embarassed to take. We need “tomche shabbos style” delivery. It won’t cost a penny – all the bochrim and yungerleit with cars can do it as part of their mivzoim route. Remember, when it comes to tzdakah the poor of your neighborhood come first, v’im lo kemach, lo Torah.
Why not find out who those families are and bring them home delivery so they don’t have to be embarrassed that everybody sees that they have to take.
And comment #4 you are very insensitive, those people would donate if they would have!
Great Organization! Mrs. Scheiner is amazing! Give as much as you can to her!
then give advise…
this needs to be done once and for all with the dignity of the recipients in mind. Either do it in a place with closed doors (like in a school) or better yet find volunteers or pay a little more to deliver the stuff to peoples homes.
Number 1 is right.why make someone feel EMBARRASED
As it is they feel like that.is there any way to do this quietly somehow.much appreciation
Please, can all of these food drives be delivered outside of Crown Heights, so that these families can save their dignity?
