A new Torah scroll was started in Crown Heights by Rabbi Lipa Schapiro, one of the elders of Chabad rabbis today, in memory of his late wife Chana.
Daughter of Rabbi Schneor Zalman Vilenkin, the Rebbe’s childhood teacher, her yahrtzeit was on Thursday.
Over 100 descendants and friends attended the writing and festive meal at Bais Rivkah on Crown Street.
“My father is donating the Torah,” Rabbi Gavriel Schapiro told COLlive. “We thought the yahrtzeit was an auspicious time to begin the writing. We are also dedicating the Torah for the good health of my father.
Asked where the Torah will be placed when completed, he said they are considering one option of rotating the Torah between the Chabad Houses run by their grandchildren.
