Levi Rosenblatt uttered the following words with extra meaning: “The saving acts, miracles and wonders which You have performed for our forefathers, in those days at this time.”
The 22-year-old rabbinical student was honored with lighting candles on a Menorah placed on a table at the 71st Precinct of the New York Police Department in Crown Heights.
He joined a group of Jewish residents gathered in the 71st NYPD precinct to offer solidarity and support after the horrific murder of two police officers in neighboring Bedford-Stuyvesant. In attendance were officers from the 71st and 77th precincts, the two station houses that protect Crown Heights.
At the private gathering, a group of Yeshiva students thanked police for saving their lives during the December 9th stabbing attack in Lubavitch headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway.
Emotions ran high as Levi Rosenblatt, who was stabbed in the attack, recited the traditional blessing “She’asa Nissim—Who has made miracles”, and lit the seven Chanukah lights. Rosenblatt, recently released from Bellevue Hospital Center, is still recovering from a stab wound to the head.
Surrounded by officers and Deputy Inspector George Fitzgibbon, Rosenblatt recited the blessings and the traditional prayer “Haneirot Halalu” which is sung after the lighting of the menorah.
Rosenblatt is a living miracle, having survived and recovered from the stabbing wounds from a knife-wielding madman who entered Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, 2 weeks ago.
Last week, he was released from the Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan, to the joys of his family, friends and the global Chabad community which were praying for his recovery.
Barry Sugar, an advocate for security of the Jewish community, offered solidarity when referring to the ruthless murder of Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. “Whether an officer is shot for wearing blue or a Jewish man is stabbed for wearing a Yarmulka, we feel that pain,” he remarked. “The Jewish community knows what it feels like to be targeted for our uniform and values.”
A visibly grateful Inspector George Fitzgibbon, commander of the 71st precinct, expressed his appreciation for the Jewish community’s comfort and support. “It’s like one big family,” he said. “I can’t thank you all enough.”
“I want to thank the NYPD who are watching 770 24 hours a day, and I am especially grateful to the officers who came in that night and saved the situation,” Rosenblatt told COLlive after lighting the Menorah to the applause of the officers.

Baruch Hashem! A true neis! And what an incredible gesture of hakaras hatov for him to light at the police precinct! But I must take issue with something written in the article: “Last week, he was released from the Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan, to the joys of his family, friends and the global Chabad community which were praying for his recovery.” I am not Lubavitch, yet I was davening for his refuah. I’m sure the global Chabad community was praying for him, but so were Yidden of all denominations all over the world. More accurate and less excluding would… Read more »
