New York City recently announced new sanitation and recycling guidelines to make the city cleaner.
The guidelines state that residents must place garbage and recycling materials at the curb no earlier than 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., respectively. However, neighborhoods with a significant Orthodox Jewish population, such as Boro Park, Crown Heights, and Williamsburg, have raised concerns about how these guidelines will affect those who observe the Jewish Shabbas.
To address these concerns, the Department of Sanitation has assured the communities that they will not be penalized for placing garbage and recycling materials outside before the designated times on Friday evenings, provided sunset precedes these times.
Residents in the areas near Crown Heights, specifically in the neighborhoods of East Flatbush, Remsen Village, and Brownsville, have also reached out to extend this courtesy to their communities.
Rabbi Yaacov Behrman, director of Operation Survival and founder of the Jewish Future Alliance, stated to COLlive that he is in contact with the mayor’s office regarding the community’s concerns.
“The city has confirmed that no tickets will be issued for violating the guidelines for the next month until after Pesach. Furthermore, after this grace period, individuals in these areas will not be penalized for observing Shabbos, and they will be able to put garbage out before Shabbos, just like in the areas with larger Jewish populations,” Behrman said.
While he’s in touch with the mayor’s office he can get all the Citi bikes removed or moved to Nostrand Rodgers Franklin
Very very true, or at least do it like they did on empire and new york on a large sidewalk! But to put it on the street is like them saying we wanna make a joke out of Crown heights.
Many people and elderly folk have cleaning ladies at certain hours. Their job is to take out the trash bags. That is usually earlier in the day. So this CANNOT WORK!
Yakov Berman, please explain that to th right parties. Thank You
Why can’t they take out the garbage themselves ?
The house keepers get paid for this. And obviously, the elderly people cannot be expected to take out trash.
Maybe you can volunteer to do that.
Not the plastic bins that get thrown around by sanitation workers and kids, or destroyed or left in the streets by delinquents and other destructive vagrants on our streets.
Please leave the city bikes where they are
They make CH look so much more modern and healthy
DO NOT!!!!!!!
clearly if it was voted upon it would not pass…. we dont live in a democracy. only those with the loudest voices are listened to.
what about alley ways is it subject to the same rules
For taking the initiative on this!!
Less cops, more garbage, less arrests, more tickets, less parking more bike stands, less sanitation and more rats.
Thank you for taking care of this! We were wondering what to do about this.
Thank you, Yakov
According to the halocha “Graf shel reyi” can be trowed out during the Shabes. There’s no problem at all.
You should learn some Halacha, that is in regards to muktzah, not hotzaah!
so now the rats will live in the gardens by the garbage instead of the sidewalk, what difference will it make, how are older people meant to go outside after 8 to put there garbage out, especially if it is dark, now we have to hire people to take out our garbage at night, the garbage men can come earlier in the day to pick up so the garbage wont sit in the street so many hrs, Dont punish the homeowners,
NYC crazy ideas what next??????????
Every other week there is ALWAYS a new “decree” with bad news for ch
-homeless shelters
-bicycles al over without caring about BUILDINGS and street parking
-garbage late hours
-busses going in middle of residential ch
Why?
What would happen if people throw the garbage in the bicycle places?
Can you imagine that? Thats a way of people to let the guys “in charge” that are not happy with these stupid resolutions…
Anyways..
When are building supers meant to put out the garbage? Work till 8pm?
All garbage needs to go into bins and dumpsters near buildings and schools! We are not living in a third world country!
It makes the job of the garbage men so much harder for them and more time consuming!
Why can’t NY do what all the other countries around the world do!!!
