“Oh every morning when I’m through sleeping, I open up my eyes and say, “Thank you Hashem for my neshama and for giving me another day.”
“Thank you Hashem for kosher pizza … and for snowstorms that keep us home from school – except for Wednesdays!”
This well-loved Released Time song finally came to vivid life today as a heavy blizzard caused the closure of many public institutions including all public schools.
However, bochurim volunteering for the Wednesday Released Time Program continued today in their efforts of bringing Jewish public school children closer to yiddishkeit.
Despite the snow, groups either met in their usual synagogues, otherwise bochurim went to the children’s homes to ensure that every child got a taste of Judaism for the week.
For hours bochurim were calling children and parents in effort to make arrangements for this out of the ordinary Release Time experience.
Today, children in over 35 public schools were reached, the first time that public schools were closed, yet the Jewish hour ran as usual.
One individual was inspired upon hearing of the great sacrifice that the bochurim had in these inclement conditions and donned Tefillin for the first time in his life.
“This is our opportunity to give the public school students a true experience of chinuch al taharas hakodesh – a day of exclusive Jewish study – and make a genuine Kiddush Hashem,” said one of the volunteers.
