With tens of thousands of people fleeing Ukraine amidst attacks from Russia, Chabad of Moldova has been working day and night to assist the displaced refugees.
Many refugees crossing the border into Moldova make their way to the Chabad Center in Kishinev, where they receive food, assistance and a place to sleep until further arrangements are made for them.
A staff of volunteers is working around the clock to assist the refugees who arrive exhausted from days of travel and drained from the ordeal of fleeing violence and leaving their homes and lives behind.
While caring for refugees on Shabbos, Rabbi Zushe Abelsky, director of Chabad of Moldova, said one woman approached him after having been served a meal at the Chabad Center.
She said her name is Malka, and she arrived in Moldova exhausted and drained after traveling 50 hours from Kiev to Kishinev.
“Rabbi, I need your help,” Malka said.
Malka then related that she had made the long and treacherous journey to Kishinev together with her mother, and now her mother was in grave danger.
“Due to the stress from the traveling, she began to experience internal bleeding,” Rabbi Abelsky told COLlive.com. “She was admitted to the hospital here in Kishinev, and they do not know what is wrong or what to do to help her. They only know that something is terribly wrong, and her life is in danger.”
Abelsky said he contacted the man who works to coordinate the assistance for the refugees, and they then contacted a parliament member in Moldova whom they know, who is also in the medical profession, and he said he would look into her case.
After speaking with the hospital, he was informed that she is in very serious condition, and will be undergoing tests, but that she is in urgent need of proper medical care.
Rabbi Abelsky immediately contacted Hatzalah, who said they would help.
Hatzalah Air arranged for a flight to pick up the woman and her daughter from the airport in Iasi, Romania and will be transporting them to Germany for better medical care.
“You are really giving her a chance to survive and hopefully recover,” said Malka with immense gratitude. “There aren’t enough forms of the word ‘thank you’ to express how I feel.”
Rabbi Abelsky is so grateful to Hatzalah and all those who assisted in this rescue mission.
“Baruch Hashem, I had the zechus to be in the right place at the right time, so we could help this refugee get medical care and hopefully save her life,” he said.
