A Chabad yeshiva bochur who was beaten by a group of bochurim for opposing messianism was instructed by two rabbis to file a police report.
The bochur, who asked to keep his name private, said he was walking in Crown Heights at night when a group caught him, covered his face and beat him badly.
He said in the days before the incident he was threatened for organizing trips to the Rebbe‘s Ohel, which messianics don’t recognize as they believe the Rebbe is physically alive.
Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba, member of Badatz Crown Heights, and Rabbi Yitzchok Yehuda Yaroslavsky, head of Beis Din Rabbonei Chabad in Israel, instructed him to file a police report.
“There is an obligation to turn to the police to prevent that such acts should be repeated, G-d forbid, and that people will be able to walk in the street without fear,” Rabbi Yaroslavsky wrote.
The attackers were said to have left personal belongings at the crime scene which give away their identities.
In his case for reporting the incident, Rabbi Osdoba quoted a sicha from the Rebbe supporting reporting aggressors to the authorities after a Lubavitcher chossid was brutally beaten by Satmar followers for teaching chassidus.

In UK if someone comes to hospital or doctor with assault injuries the incident is reported to police.The victim can decline to press charges,but there is a record kept in the A E .Sometimes police will anyway investigate especially if intimidation is a factor in the attack.

If they want to go to the Ohel, let them pay for their own trip. They take money from Aishel and Drizen to be in 770 with the rebbe, and then don’t even step into 770. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you. These people would never pay to go the Ohel, only after Hendel organized Aishel did they decide to come. The money should only be given to those who remain in 770 and don’t attend any other gatherings elsewhere. If they do attend- then next year they should not be given any money to come.

Isnt this the bochur who gave a ride to kids who were part of a program from the Ohel to 770 without asking or finding out if there were adults in charge of them,the counselours in charge were going nuts looking for these kids and were understandingly very worked up and upset,if your kid was missing wouldnt you be mad at the person who took them?

Every case is different and may have different psak regarding going to the police. It’s an easy way out for a Rov to say go and denounce another jew. That’s the difference between the two letters.

In the later case, there was clear intention and a continued real threat of the infliction of very serious bodily injury and even worse chas vesholom. Im not going to get into an argument whether they should go to the police or not, but it definitly needs to be dealt w one way or another. They need to respect people for once. For the bochur who got beaten up like its Nazi Germany, for the bochurim who chose a very auspicious time of the year to have such a sin on their plates and for the Rabbonim who need to encourage one Jew to turn in other Jews.
