Rabbi Shneur Zalman Wilschanski, one of the longtime Rosh Yeshivos of Chabad who was also known for leading Chassidic farbrengens,
He was 74 and suffered an illness.
He was born in Paris, France, as the eldest son of Rabbi Refoel Wilschanski, secretary of the European Lubavitch Lishka bureau, and his mother, Mrs. Zlate Wilschanski. who passed at a young age.
As a child and later as a bochur at Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim in the small town of Brunoy, he grew up around and was deeply influenced by the legendary chassidim such as R’ Yosef Goldberg, R’ Yisroel Noach Blinitzky, R’ Shlomo Chaim Kesselman, R’ Nochum Labkovsky, R’ Nissan Neminov and R’ Zalman Shimon Devorkin.
He learned in Brunoy until the year 5730 (1970) when he traveled to the United States for the first time to be near the Rebbe and learn in the Central Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim Lubavitch at 770 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY.
Over the years, he assisted his brother Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Wilschanski (later Rosh Yeshiva Chassidei Chabad in Tzfas, Israel) in his work on Vaad Lehafotzas Sichos, the group which edited, printed and distributed the Rebbe’s sichos to the world.
Upon reaching marriageable age, he married Mrs. Esther Wilschanski, the daughter of Rabbi Tzvi Yosef and Golda Kotlarsky, Chassidim and residents of Crown Heights.
In the year 1978, he was appointed Rosh Yeshiva of Tomchei Tmimim of Morristown, one of the institutions of the Rabbinical College of America led by Dean Rabbi Moshe Herson. Rabbi Wilschanski also served as the Rav of Congregation Levi Yitzchak in Morristown and moreh hora’ah of the local Chabad community.
Over the years, he has educated many bochurim who grew up to be Chassidim and Shluchim. Despite being a Rosh Yeshiva and delivering shiurim in Gemara, Rabbi Wilschanski was known for his Chassidic warmth and wide knowledge of stories and anecdotes. He led many farbrengens for Bochurim and Chassidim over the years.
He was an honored guest at the Global Yarchei Kallah, the annual summer gathering of Chabad Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshiva at Camp Gan Israel in Parksville, New York. He often served as the emcee of the main session or the Melave Malka in honor of the Rebbe’s father.

For 3 years, my table in Morriston Zal was situated next to his table and I would often see – up close and personal – how he communicated with his sons (both the ones learning in Zal as well as when his little boys would come upstairs to visit him). The love, respect and pride he had for his children was difficult to conceal. It moved me back then, and it still moves me today when I communicate with my own children. I’m so sorry for your loss. May Rabbi Wilschanski be that final straw up there in Gan Eden… Read more »
So sorry. I was one of the many Bochurim that benefited from his warmth and kindness. Thank you! He will be sorely missed
Horrible news! Please update with levaya info
I knew Rabbi Wilchanski well from my time in Morristown, back in 1999. It so happens, a few shabbosim ago I heard Rabbi Wilshanski farbreng at the Rayim Ahuvim shul in Crown Heights. Listening to him farbreng brought back many memories from my time in yeshiva. It never occurred to me that it would be the last time I would see my rosh yeshiva. He farbrenged with a lot of heart and enthusiasm. Reb Zalman! The Mishna states- “mi shehecshich baderech.” You left us too soon!

I studied in Morristown in the early 80s. Whenever Rabbi Wilschanski would see me in 770 (decades later) he would always greet me with a smile by name. I never understood how, despite educating thousands of students, he remembered my name. Many find memories of my days in yeshiva under him.
Would like to mention,
In addition to all Rabbi Wilschanski’s priceless service to RCA/Morristown community.

I was in Morristown in 98 and 99 besides running the Yeshiva, I found him to be considerate, kind, a softly spoken person, but also had the ability to explain very deep things, one thing comes to mind, it was one morning in Sader Niglah and my chavrusah was not well so I was on my own, he comes in and passes my table which was in the middle of the Zal he said to me come to my table, I sat down, I was thinking to myself what did I do, he opened up his Gemora it was the… Read more »
He was my Rosh Yeshiva when he first came to Morristown in 1978. The Rebbe told me to ask the HaHanala about any issue I needed and I found Rabbi Whilshanski’s guidance very helpful. Years later when he would see me he always greeted me with a smile.

A beautiful family. Sending love to all.
I was his talmid years ago, always kind and considered, even if wasn’t always the best bocher. Hamokom Yenachem Eschem!!!

I was a Talmid in Morristonw in the early 2000s. He was a very good magid shiur in Nigleh. He was made aware that I came from a poorer home and did not have much money for basics, he called me over and gave me an envelope of cash and said its a present. I was stunned I wanted to give it back to him, he refused saying that I had made a proper Kinyan on it and its mine.
He gave me an enjoyment in Gemara and credit him for me being able to learn Nigleh today.
כל מי שרוח הבריות נוחה הימנו, המקום נוחה הימנו כל מי שאהוב למטה בידוע שהוא אהוב למעלה- R. Zalman was a prince in every facet of his being. His תורה ועבודה his חסידישקייט his חסד ומידות and he certainly was a בר דעת, -not to mention his countless כשרונות. What makes his פטירה so hard to bear is that non of the above is exaggerated in the least bit. We lost a giant חסיד, friends and mentor to so many that always made himself accessible. You knew without a doubt that he felt and genuinely cared about the people who… Read more »
I had left yeshiva in the 80’s wasted a year or so. Then when I had enough, I decided on my own to return to yeshiva and came to Morristown. Rabbi Zalman tested me and told me I wasn’t ready for Tomchei so, like Rabbi Akiva I had to humble myself and sit with the Baalei Teshuvah’s but BH it was the best decision I made. He was a special man and later when i got married invited us to a Shabbos meal at his home. Was very special to see how he interacted with his children. A beautiful mix… Read more »
He seemed to be from a different generation altogether.
Definitely not “American” or “western” personality.
What was in his heart was always on his face.
I was in Morristown for 4 years. I wasn’t exceptional in any way, and didn’t speak with him so often. But he loved me just because. Many years later, when he would see me, his face would light up and he would give such a warm handshake.
He had pure Fear of hashem. His sincerity was quite intense.
This feels horrible…
A warm and gentle man whom I had the pleasure to meet years ago when my daughter Dina married Rabbi Shmuel Estreicher from Morristown. My late wife (Yael) and I were so impressed by his knowledge of Chassidus and his impeccable French when he addressed us. These giants of the Chabad world are slowly disappearing, but they have made sure to infuse us during their lifetime with the tools necessary to continue their legacy. They have set the bar very high but they made sure to give us all it takes for us to jump.
