Rabbi Zalman Abelsky, Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Kishinev, Moldova passed away on Friday, 29 Sivan, 5774.
He was 86.
Rabbi Abelsky led the rebirth of Judaism and Jewish communal life in Kishinev, the capital of Moldova, which is known as a place of terrible pogroms which were perpetrated against the Jews at the turn of the century.
Now an independent republic, under the leadership of Rabbi Abelsky, these tragic scenes have happily given way to scenes of a vibrant, spirited Jewish life.
Rabbi Abelsky, together with his wife Leah, came to Kishinev in 1990 from their home in Israel, to rebuild Jewish life after the fall of the communist regime.
Natives of Russia, the Abelskys lived in Israel for over 40 years, but in spite of age and family ties, they rallied to the call to rebuild Jewish Moldova.
Leaving their children and grandchildren in Israel, they arrived in Kishinev as Shluchim, to bring about an awakening of the Jewish spirit in a place where it had lain dormant for nearly a century.
Although many of the young Jews of Moldova had emigrated to Israel and a variety of other Western countries, the Abelskys led the community of 10,000 Jews in Moldova, caring for their spiritual and physical needs.
Rabbi Abelsky set out to rebuild the devastated Jewish community and to restore to the Jews of Kishinev their identity as Jews. Against all odds, he established a flourishing day school with 300 full time students (Jewish Secondary School #15), a day care center, a summer camp (“Gan Yisroel”), and a program of adult education courses.
He is survived by his wife, Leah and children Bluma Nachshon, Rochel Madanchik, Chani Zalmanov, Zushe Abelsky, Shmerel Abelsky and Yossi Abelsky.
He was predeceased by his son Moshe Abelsky obm.
The Levaya will take place Sunday in Kfar Chabad, Israel and burial in Jerusalem.

Im not Chabad. Dont know much Chassidus. I was fortune to meet Rabbi Zalman in Kishinev, he taught me whatever I know. I know how to read from Torah, to read Haftorah, to pray. I know what it means to be a Chassid, only because I watched Rabbi Zalman how he lives his life.
I was helped by his family in Israel and NY. I was treated wherever I went as a son of Rabbi Zalman.
His family should be comforted.
He helped me become frum. I went to his first Jewish school on moldova. I never knew how old he is. Always full of life, energy, help, determination and always available to help and give blessings. A true chosid of the Rebbe. May his memory be a blessing and may his family know no sorrow
He was responsible for my intro to Yiddishkite and chassidus in 1989. Although this was the last time I saw him the pain is very real. BD”E
Spending summers wi th rabbi abelsky was most spectacular. His yiras shamayim, was like nothing we ever witnessed and what he was able to accomplish reflected a man closely connected to a higher reality of what us as humans can accomplish. A real chossid! Love this man!
I am so sad about this.. I went to the jewish school #15 in Kishinev, which was established by Rabbi Zalman Abelsky. I was always proud to be there and to meet the Abelsky family..BDH
Just a few days ago Levi Abelsky got married.
May the family know of no more pain.
AD MOSAI AD MOSAI AD MOSAI!!!!
What an amazing couple, based on the article he would have been 62 when they left Israel to bring Yiddishkeit back to the Jews of Moldova. I would like to send condolences and express my admiration to the family, where can we write?

Tremendous Koach. I’m sad to read.
Years ago, I was privileged to spend a summer in Moldova.
He was a real chossid with yiras shomayim.
The chassidishe warmth and personal care he displayed towards his community and all who came in contact with him, stays with me to this very day.
So sad.
