Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz, shliach of the Rebbe, joyfully yet longingly, joined his brothers at arms, Sunday night at the Kinus Hashluchim, from his home.
He got ready and excitedly watched and was recharged as 4,000 of his fellow shluchim came together from around the world in achdus. Rabbi Yitzi, is a shliach like no other. His work is tireless and fruitful. His shlichus in Temecula, is a great source of pride yet his reach goes far beyond the quaint and beautiful town.
Rabbi Yitzi, lives in Los Angeles and resides in his room/office/shul/classroom/family room. His spiritual outreach has not been confined to his physical limitations. You see, Rabbi Yitzi has a rapidly progressive form of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). To briefly and not adequately enough explain the monstrosity of the disease; Symptoms begin in the muscles that control speech and swallowing or in the hands, arms, legs or feet. Thus, losing the ability to speak, eat and breathe unassisted. Not all people with ALS experience the same symptoms, however, progressive muscle weakness and paralysis are universally experienced.
Rabbi Yitzi is unable to speak with his mouth, move his body, eat and breathe on his own. He is on life support, and gets his nutrition through a feeding tube. But that has NOT taken away his ability to smile and be joyful.
The joy he gets from the hundreds if not thousands of visitors is equal to the joy he gets from writing his weekly D’var Torah he writes and publishes on his blog, which he does with his Tobii eye tracking computer. What life modern technology has given to Rabbi Yitzi, Baruch HaShem. It’s incomprehensible. It’s also very expensive.
Run4Yitzi is a fundraiser that started three years ago. Team Yitzi, which essentially began as just one person running the Miami Half-Marathon, became a team of 4 the first year, raising a total of $10,418.00. Last year the team grew to 7 runners and the fundraiser brought in $21,834.00!!
This year, TEAM YITZI has blossomed into nothing short of astounding. We have over 20 team members (adults and children), not only from Florida. We have members from New York and California. We also have members in Eretz Yisroel who have been training to run the 13.1 miles in the Holy Land!! As an added bonus, its with tremendous excitement to announce that Dina Hurwitz, Yitzi’s wife, will be running with the team this year. Dina is a TRUE testament of strength, courage and determination!! A real Eishes Chayil!!
Just as our team has grown in size, pride and excited determination, we have decided to match the feeling of determination and raise our fundraising goal to $50,000.00!!
TEAM YITZI is about working hard to raise awareness and funds for the Hurwitz family. Join us!!
