Friedrich Merz, the winner of the election and next Chancellor of Germany has shown strong commitment to the Jewish community and Israel. He emphasizes Germany’s historical responsibility to support Israel and fight antisemitism.
In October 2024, Merz successfully urged the German government to resume arms deliveries to Israel, reinforcing his firm stance on Germany’s unwavering support. He has also been a vocal advocate against antisemitism, stressing the importance of protecting Jewish life in Germany.
Merz shares a warm relationship with the Rabbi of Berlin, Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal, whom he has met several times. As Rabbi Teichtal told YNet News: “Mr. Merz is a close personal friend and a great friend of Israel. Over the years, he has hosted us many times to discuss strengthening Jewish life in Berlin. It was far more than just a warm reception.”
Each year, Rabbi Teichtal places a Chanukah menorah at CDU headquarters, and last year, Merz joined the lighting ceremony and delivered holiday greetings in front of the menorah.
“After the lighting, Merz told me he was very happy the menorah stood here at party headquarters but even more so that Jewish life in Germany is thriving,” Teichtal told YNET.
Following the CDU/CSU’s election victory in 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Merz, highlighting the close ties between Germany and Israel. Merz continues to be a strong supporter of Israel and a valued friend of the Jewish community.

Mass immigration from dangerous countries is the biggest threat to Germany right now, including the Jewish community there. It would’ve been much better if the anti-immigration party won. Any politician can come to Jewish events & smile for the cameras, but if they’re not going to stop Hamas-loving Islamists from pouring into their country, they’re no friend of ours.
