Rabbi Pinchas Zev Wolf Marasow, a longtime educator from Crown Heights, passed away on Thursday, 13 Iyar, 5780.
He was 84.
R’ Velvel was born in Petersburg, Russia in 1936, to his parents, R’ Dovid Leib and Ceita Marasow. His grandfather was the famed Chosid R’ Chonye Marasow. He was educated with mesiras nefesh in the underground Yeshiva during Stalin’s regime.
As a child, his family survived the Stalinist purges and the hunger in Leningrad. After World War II, he escaped with his family to Paris, where he attended Tomchei Temimim in France.
At the suggestion of the Rebbe, the family immigrated to Montreal, Canada, where he studied in Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva and studied to become a schochet.
With the encouragement of the Rebbe, he became a teacher of young children.
In 5723 he married his wife, Naomi, and they settled in Detroit where he served as a Schochet and melamed in the Lubavitch Cheder.
In 5731, the family moved to Crown Heights, where he worked as an educator for over fifty years. He was beloved by his many hundreds of talmidim, infusing them with true yiras shamyim and chassidishkeit.
R’ Velvel was known as a devoted Chosid and Yirei Shomayim, and as one who was meticulous in the keeping of Mitzvos. He was known for his sincerity during davening, and was a dugma chaya to his students and all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Naomi, and children, Chanie Lazar – Montreal, Canada, Yosef Yitzchok Marasow – Seattle, WA, Moshe Shmuel Marasow – Crown Heights, Elchonon Marasow – Paris, France, Shrage Marasow – Crown Heights and Zalman Marasow – Crown Heights, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Morozows have lost their father, as did so many of my generation. These are the tayare Chassidim, fathers, neighbors of my childhood. Block and bungalow colony memories wash over me. All around the same age. Gone in a few weeks. In addition to the famous community leaders whom we lost, there are these fine men, Crown Heights pillars. Chein, Morozow, Drizin, Heber, Scheiner…there are more. I’m so sorry. It’s okay to make this sad statement. We need to grieve together. whenever I visited CH and davened in the same shul as R’ Velvel ob”m, we greeted each other with great warmth, we felt close perhaps because we are from the same birthplace, and because our families knew each other from way back.
A very special chossid indeed. יהי זכרו ברוך
