Series 1: Navigating a Jewish Divorce
By Chanie Barber-Biston
I’m truly proud to have partnered with my father Rabbi Yacov Barber in creating this MASTERCLASS series. It has most definitely been a passion project for the both of us.
For years I’ve watched on the sidelines as my father worked tirelessly to promote, protect and champion the plight of the Agunah.
And for years we would discuss, in frustration, possible ways we could affect far-reaching change to such a prevalent problem within our global jewish community.
The goal always being to find a proactive rather than retroactive approach to the issue.
How can we educate, inform and empower women before they embark on the Get process. The intention being that with that, there would be less chance of a woman finding herself in the insufferable position of an Agunah.
It is our firm hope that these classes are a step in that direction.
Encouraging women to know their rights, create strategies for best outcome and educating the community at large on the important role we all play.
It is from those years of advocacy, desire to fill the information void and burgeoning community interest, that these classes came to be.
With his years of experience in the varying roles that come into play during the Divorce process my father, Rabbi Barber, fit the bill.
During his years as a Pulpit Rabbi in Australia he was Dayan on the Melbourne Beit Din and presided over 600 divorces.
Now residing in New York he has continued his role as a Dayan, as well as acting as a Toen (Jewish Lawyer) and Mediator of Divorces.
His understanding and pragmatic manner have already helped so many, and these classes are the fulfillment of a dream to reach and help so many more.
