For a moment there, it looked the assassination attempt on the life of Rabbi Arie Leib Tkach has been completed.
Photos showed the Chabad Rabbi who leads the Jewish Community of Krasnodar, a major city in southern Russia, bloodied and lifeless.
Only, the assassin was an undercover police agent, the photos were fully staged and Rabbi Tkach fully cooperated with the scheme.
The people who commissioned the assassination are associated with an anarchist group called “USSR citizens” who don’t recognize the government of the Russian Federation.
Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar said members of the group “do not recognize the liquidation of the Soviet Union, walk with homemade Soviet passports and do not pay for the utility services or housing.”
The assassination was ordered to be done before the beginning of the new Jewish year on Rosh Hashana, Rabbi Lazar said.
Local TV reported that the group hired a police detective who in turn asked Rabbi Tkach to stage his own death in order to implicate the anarchists.
A make-up artist was hired to paint the rabbi’s face and shirt with blood and cuts. Photos of the rabbi were sent to the anarchists to document their exchange.
Shortly after that, Russian police raided the anarchist’s location and arrested 2 suspects.
Rabbi Lazar said that the “USSR citizens” group have already made threats against the synagogue in Krasnodar last year.
“We turned to law enforcement then – and, as it turns out, the police really kept their hand on the pulse and did everything to prevent the crime,” he said in a statement.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the Krasnodar police for tracking the criminals in time and preventing the murder of the head of the city Jewish community,” Rabbi Lazar said.
