Rabbi Sholom Ber Gorodetsky, a resident of Crown Heights who was involved in communal activities of Chabad-Lubavitch, passed away on Thursday, 25 Iyar 5782.
He was 83.
He was the son of Rabbi Binyomin Gorodetsky OBM, the chossid who represented the Frierdiker Rebbe and the Rebbe in Europe and North Africa and led Chabad activities there in the aftermath of the Second World War.
At the request of the Frierdiker Rebbe, Rabbi Gorodetsky established the “European and North African Bureau of Chabad-Lubavitch,” known in Hebrew as the Lishka.
In an interview with JEM, R’ Sholom Ber recalled the personal care the Rebbe has showed him in the first years after the family arrived in the United States.
Because his father was often abroad, Sholom Ber merited to have the Rebbe personally attend his private Bar Mitzvah celebration. The Rebbe even said a sicha there which was later printed in Likkutei Sichos.
R’ Sholom Ber served as the director of the Lishka, and was a board member of the Central Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim Lubavitch in New York, and a chairman of the Vaad Hakohol – Crown Heights Jewish Community Council.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Leah Gittel Gorodetsky, their children Henshi – Miami, Florida; R’ Yosef Yitzchok Gorodetsky – Paris, France; Raizel Baila Fellig – Miami, Florida; R’ Mendy Gorodetsky – Crown Heights; R’ Shmuel Gorodetsky – Five Towns, NY; and grandchildren.
