For the past 10 years, Australian Rabbi Yehoram Ulman has been helping hundreds of rabbis across the globe on the issue of Yuchsin, Jewish ancestry checks for matters of marriage.
The senior member of the Sydney Beth Din has written a protocol that was endorsed by the Chief Rabbis of Israel and it is also printed in his new Sefer Milishkas Hadorom.
He wrote a practical guide in English in the Chabad House Compass magazine for Shluchim and it is being reprinted on COLlive.com with permission.
Rabbi Ulman is making his protocol and the article available in light of the recent scandal of Ali Hasan Hawila, the Lebanese-born man who lied about his faith to integrate in the Jewish community and marry a Jewish woman from Brooklyn, NY.
A few weeks ago, Rabbi Ulman started setting up a group of rabbonim, students of his Dayonus program, who will be offering to assist Shluchim on all matters related to yuchsin and will be overseen by Rabbi Ulman’s Beis din.

The Chabad Houses should implement this for anyone joining their programs.
I was a bochur shliach in Sydney about 15 years ago. Rabbi ulman gave some fascinating shiurim on the topic of Yuchasin, telling us about his meeting with R. Ovadya Yosef on shaila he was dealing with. He is a Talmud Chochom and a world renowned expert on this subject.
The English version had to be downloaded each page separately.
Thank you for publishing.
I hope this information is being provided to all sectors and Rabbonim not just to Chabad Rabbonim.
Please make English version more available to download as one file.
On the first page of the English article it mentions “knowledge of Yiddish” as possible partial evidence? Not every Jew comes from an Ashkenaz background. Please don’t limit your evidence to European Jewishness. Hashem sent us all over His world and we have been persecuted in lands far and wide.
Sephardic Jews can be found in all countries and their descendants who aren’t religious also. Obviously they wouldn’t know Yiddish.
